Assessor-Recorder Torres On Black History Month

Happy Black History Month! From San Francisco’s William Leidesdorff, one of our city’s “founding fathers,” to the phenomenal writings and life of Maya Angelou, to our own history making Mayor London N. Breed, and countless other everyday heroes in community, African Americans have made an indelible mark on San Francisco and its standing in the nation and the globe. This month, we pay tribute to those who sacrificed to ensure Black Lives Matter, to elevate our conversations about race, equity and justice in our communities, and to realize cultural and economic success for the Black community and our City. May we use this time to reflect on those contributions and sacrifices, so that our collective work to advance opportunities for the next generation of Black leaders may be realized with the understanding of our history of struggle and success.

Black Futures Month also reminds us of the importance of storytelling and celebration in imagining a future where all Black people live freely to dream, to flourish and to be. During this month of recognition and imagining, we are reminded of efforts both local and national to advance equity and inclusion in our communities, to advance protections for voting rights, to implement police reforms, to expand access to healthcare, education, and housing and to realize pay equity all for the benefit of Black Health and Well-Being. May all of us continue in our efforts to advance our beloved community together, in celebration of the Black community, and our collective efforts to realize a just and equitable society for all.
